Telephone Landlines Losing Service In Jersey Shore Town?

Posted: Updated:
Mantoloking, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Superstorm Sandy took a lot with it when it hit New Jersey almost two years ago. Besides people’s homes and valuables, the hurricane also took away the old copper-based telephone lines in Mantoloking, New Jersey. However, instead of replacing the telephone lines so people can keep their landlines, Verizon has decided instead to install a cell-based system called VoiceLink.

Nowadays, more and more people do not have a landline and strictly use their cell phones. However, that isn’t the case with everyone like Richard Giordanella, a Mantoloking resident, who is worried about how his parents will take the changes being made to their phone options.

“Even my own parents love using the landline. They hardly ever use the cell phone, that would be the only problem area,” Giordanella said.

AARP in Princeton is conference calling with thousands of members of Verzion’s VoiceLink Plan to see how the feel about the service. However, AARP volunteer Lilyan Cralle says that the company does not like the VoiceLink Plan at all.

“The copper wire has its value and if they’re going to replace it, they have to replace all of the things that it does,” Craelle explained.

Assemblyman Dan Benson and Rate Council Director Stephanie Brand are pushing a bill forcing the Board of Public Utilities to look into what they call Verizon’s ‘shoddy maintenance of landlines’.

“We’re hearing Verizon isn’t maintaining the copper wire as they are required to by law and that’s why we need the BPU to act, and this bill will make them act,” Benson stated.

Verizon spokesman Lee Gierczynski shared that the company has a long-standing commitment to landline maintenance. Previously, Verzion has invested $4 billion dollars over the past five years. Gierczynski also called Benson’s bill “anti-consumer, anti-competitive, and anti-business”. Verizon stated that they only had about 100 customers in Mantoloking and that rebuilding the landlines out there would cost millions. Gierczynski called VoiceLink technology “tried and true”, but admitted that in can’t do everything copper lines can. In those cases, he said customers could choose other carriers.

He said he was on his way to work outside of the Hoboken taxi stand when a cop knocked on the window, kicked him out of the car and ticketed the Uber driver.
