Home falling from Lake Whitney cliff to be set on fire

Posted: Updated:
LAKE WHITNEY, Texas - The luxury home dangling from a cliff at Lake Whitney will be demolished by a controlled fire on Friday morning before it can collapse on its own.

There was an emergency meeting Thursday between the $800,000 home's owner, the neighborhood HOA and the Hill County judge.

Part of the home collapsed earlier this week after the limestone cliff supporting it gave way to erosion.

A demolition crew from Austin was on the scene Thursday to review the options and ultimately decided to burn the house at 10 a.m. Friday.

One discarded idea was to wrap the 4,000 square-foot structure in a steel mesh and tearing it down by pulling it way from the cliff.

The home is currently unoccupied. Friends of the homeowners said the family moved out after noticing structural problems back in February.

The homeowners will incur all the costs of the demolition and cleanup and were told the damages are not covered by insurance.
