Cedar Lake ballet company celebrates 10 years

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet's dances have moved audiences all over the world. The Chelsea-based ballet company is made up of 16 talented dancers.

"You're dancing together, you're sweating, throwing each other and you have a really clear trust," says Billy Bell, a Cedar Lake dancer. "So it definitely does as the cliché goes, become a family."

You may remember Bell from his two seasons on the Fox show "So You Think You Can Dance." As part of Cedar Lake, he's living his dream, he says.

"I auditioned actually for four years in a row, and I finally got in when there was an available spot so I was super excited to be a part of the company," he says.

Ebony Williams has been with the company for nine years.

"If I have a bad day, I can come in, and I dance, and I can let all of that go," Williams says. "Even if I'm moving with a lot of aggression, there's this peace that comes with it. I feel free. I feel I can do anything and there's no judgment. I love it."

This year Cedar Lake is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In honor of the milestone, the group is performing this week at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

"It's such a historic and major theater in New York, and the dance scene especially, that it feels really nice to be actually on that stage," Bell says.

Alexandra Damiani, the artistic director, says: "For me to be able to coach those dancers and witness them growing, and touch so many people when we go on tour, the audience, I get really happy. That's it. It makes me happy."

Damiani says she is especially proud of the versatility of the shows.

"I get goose bumps, and sometimes some tears," she says. "No matter I've been here 10 years, almost now, and I just get so proud. And involved. I feel a part of myself is on stage with them."

And dancers say the audience is in for something special.

"I hope they think we're fierce. I hope that they love it," Williams says. Obviously we love it. And when you're so passionate about something, I hope, it should come across."

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.

The breathtaking spa is illuminated by hundreds of candles and smells of invigorating eucalyptus. For around $80 you can bathe in the tranquil blue pools for 90 minutes and find the temperature that's right for you.
