ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) - Public health officials say five members of an upstate New York family are receiving the rabies vaccine after they were attacked in their backyard by a suspected rabid fox last weekend.

The Broome County Health Department tells local media that a fox killed by a police officer in the village of Endicott on Sunday later tested positive for rabies.

Officials say the family was attacked by a fox Saturday. The officer killed a fox the next day when it attacked him.

Health officials say there's no way to confirm the rabid fox killed by the officer was the same one that came in contact with the family. They're being treated for possible exposure to rabies as a precaution.

Authorities are urging Binghamton-area residents to make sure pets have been vaccinated for rabies.
