DETROIT (WJBK) - In an attempt to make their Detroit street safer neighbors are cleaning, boarding up abandoned homes and cutting grass -- but say the city can't even pick up the trash.

At least six piles of trash sit along the curb have been waiting to be picked up for two weeks now.

"We're doing our part; we need the city to do theirs, too," says neighbor Denine Jones.

Neighbor Fred Davis says after a mother of four was found murdered just down the block two weeks ago, he and other neighbors decided to get together and make their street cleaner and, in turn, safer.

"We cleaned out all the houses that's [sic] abandoned on the block. We trimmed and cut all the shrubs and everything on the area and we sweeped out the street" Davis says.

Neighbors say they're all trying to keep the neighborhood clean and safe for children and are doing the hard part themselves.

"We had everything stacked and ready to go for the bulk pick-up but it hasn't been picked up," Davis says.

"Come on. All we're asking is for a little bit of help," says Jones.

With bulk pick-up scheduled every other week the mayor's office tells Fox 2 Friday that two pick-ups were indeed missed, on June 4th and June 11th, and blame the new contractor that started on June 1st.

Piedmont perhaps slipped through the cracks, but just hours later the city sent a truck out to clean up the mess.

Davis vow to keep his street clean and hopes others follow.

"I want to see everybody want to join together on every block to make this a better community to live in," he says.

The mayor's office says if your neighborhood is planning to do a community clean-up contact your district manager to ensure bulk trash pickup.
