NYC parents rally against trailers used as kindergarten classrooms

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Parents at P.S. 48 in Washington Heights rallied Friday because they are fed up with the blue and white trailers, or transportable classroom units, parked on their children's school playground for the past 10 years.

Each day, 80 kindergarteners spend their entire school day inside these units, leaving only for lunch and physical education. Photos show that the trailers are a mess and are long fraught with serious health and safety issues, such as mold, rats, and flooding.

Parents like Emanuel Guzman have been complaining about these trailers for about as long as they've been parked. But now they are doubly annoyed that city says the trailers will be gone sometime over the next five years.

In a statement to Fox 5 News, the Department of Education said: "Safety is our priority and to this end, we maintain our TCU's and make repairs when needed... There is no active mold. We continue to monitor conditions."

But for these parents living in a low income, predominately immigrant community, they can't help but feel ignored.

We pressed the DOE as to why removing the trailers is taking so long but the department wouldn't elaborate.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
