Phoenix Police release suspect description in priest attack

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Police are still investigating the murder of one priest and the assault on another.

56 year-old Father Joseph Terra made a 9-1-1 call Wednesday night after he was brutally attacked at the rectory at the Mother of Mercy Mission.

"My assistant chased him, he's ben beaten, right now he's beaten," said Father Terra.

His assistant, 28 year-old Father Kenneth Walker was shot and killed during the attack.

Silent Witness put out a flyer Friday offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The description on the flyer of a man in his 40's came from Father Terra.

Bishop Olmstead said last night that despite having brain injuries he was still able to give police a description of the suspect from his hospital bed.

"It helps immensely for us to be able to get some of that information from him, whatever information he can provide to us, as we have limited information at this point," said Sgt. Steve Martos.

Sgt. Martos said that strong physical evidence is being processed from both the residential area of the church where the attack took place Wednesday night, and the vehicle that the suspect or suspects abandoned.

While the motive is unknown, police are telling us more about the attack.

"We can say that this individual, or individuals, would be considered dangerous from the standpoint of how they brutally attacked Father Terra, and the injuries he sustained, and the number of injuries that he sustained, almost to the point of death," said Martos.

People from the Catholic community like 13 year-old Robbie Dunkle and his mom continue to honor the fallen Father, Kenneth Walker, by bringing flowers and lighting candles.

"It represents that there's still life here, and he is still with us," said Dunkle.

While there is only one suspect description at this point, police say there could be more suspects involved.

"The police have not given us any impression that this happened because these were priests, they have not told us to be anymore cautious than before," said Bishop Thomas J Olmstead.

Anyone with information on the attack is encouraged to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. A fund has been setup to help pay for Father Walker's funeral, you can donate here: http://www.gofundme.com/fr-kenneth-walker
