NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The pilot of a small plane died in a crash on Long Island on Tuesday morning.

Suffolk County Police say that Hanan Shoshany, 53, of Jamaica, Queens, died when his single-engine Cessna 400 went down in the yard of 51 Camille Lane in East Patchogue at about 9:05 a.m.

It is not clear what caused the deadly crash, which was followed by a fire that damaged the house. A two-block radius was evacuated as a precaution, reported the Associated Press.

Investigators say Shoshany died a hero because he apparently did his best to avoid hitting any houses as the plane came down. In fact, the plane just missed a house where a baby was sleeping. The heat from the explosion melted the siding on that house, but no one on the ground was injured.

A tweet from the scene described the ground as having shook during the impact.

Shoshany was flying from Republic Airport in Farmingdale to MacArthur Airport in Islip.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were continuing the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The incident comes only days after another small plane crash that killed a member of the Rockefeller family in Westchester County. Richard Rockefeller, the great-grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, was killed in the crash on Friday.

The Piper Meridian single-engine turboprop plane went down shortly after takeoff from Westchester County Airport. It narrowly missed a house in Purchase.
