Atlantic City Opens “Gay Beach”

Posted: Updated:
Atlantic City, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Atlantic City is banking on the "gay economy" to rescue it from economic woes.  Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian has dedicated a gay beach on the Atlantic City boardwalk. Guardian himself came out in 1978 and he hopes that this will help increase the value of real estate and encourage people to move to the city. Guardian shared what the importance of the rainbow flag means to the gay community.

“And so there’s a whole underground out there and if you want to go to a restaurant or bed and breakfast or bar or a hotel and you saw the rainbow flag you knew that it was either gay-owned or gay-friendly and you knew you were welcome now. And probably more important for gay kids as they were running down the street, afraid that they were gonna get beat-up, they knew that when you saw this flag it was a place of refuge, it was a place of safety” he shared.

After his speech, Guardian placed the rainbow flag on top of Park Place archway going into what will now be designated as the gay beach in Atlantic City.

Ironically, that section of beach, up until the ‘80’s, was known as a gay friendly beach all along. Now this area will once again be a special place for the LGBT community.

However, residents of other shore towns are on the fence with this idea.

“I’d rather another doggy beach, but I don’t know. They can’t mingle with everybody else? I mean why does everything have to be segregated all the time? I mean why does everything have to have a label? Girl beach, boy beach, gay beach, I just don’t think that they need to have that,” Ocean Beach beachgoer Janice Forte said.

Others feel like this is simply a marketing ploy and it’s not meant to segregate any one-group of people, but simply encourage people from all walks of life to get down to the Jersey Shore this summer.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
