CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Dense fog was reported in Chicago and surrounding towns Thursday morning, delaying flights at O’Hare and Midway international airports.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for the “patchy dense fog,” which is expected to last until at least 8:30 a.m. in parts of Chicago, Waukegan, and northwest Indiana cities Gary and Valparaiso.

Visibility should improve inland of the lake by mid-morning, but the fog may hang around the shoreline until the afternoon, the statement said. Drivers should be mindful and be prepared for changing visibility, the statement said.

More than 175 flights were canceled at O’Hare because of low visibility Thursday morning, and most other flights were delayed by about 45 minutes, according to the city’s Department of Aviation. Flights at Midway were experiencing “minor delays,” the department said.

There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday before 2 p.m. in Chicago with a high near 72 degrees, the weather service said. Thundestorms are more likely Friday paired with a high temperature of 77 degrees.
