A crash involving a pickup truck and heavy-duty machinery killed one person and shut down both sides of the Dallas North Tollway on Friday afternoon.
The driver of the pickup truck, 70-year-old Joseph Mart Higginboutham, was killed when his vehicle was struck by a drilling rig arm hanging in some of the lanes of northbound traffic. The wreck occurred at the start of Friday's rush hour near Frankford Road.
A DPS spokesman said a triple-axle truck with a drilling rig mounted on its bed was going southbound when it had a tire blowout, getting pulled to the left lane and its rig hanging over into the other side of traffic.
Traffic was forced off the Tollway to the access roads and side streets.
Dallas police were on scene along with Dallas fire officials to investigate the accident and help clear the road.
The driver of the drilling rig has not been ticketed or charged.
Higginboutham lived in east Dallas with his wife of many years. Neighbors described him as a sweet man always willing to lend a hand to someone in need.
Higginboutham had a son who lives in Dallas and a daughter who lives in Italy. Higginboutham’s wife is a breast cancer survivor.
