NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Talk about a power couple!

Riaan Manser and longtime girlfriend Vasti Geldenhuys made the arduous trek of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a small — but high-tech — 23-foot rowboat called "Spirit of Madiba" starting on Dec. 30 and ending Friday at the Statue of Liberty.

That’s more than 6000 miles.  They arrived in New York City after a pit stop in Miami.

“We went one step further than Christopher Columbus” Riann said. “That guy was so lazy he stopped in San Salvador in the Bahamas.”

They survived on freeze dried food and fish fresh from the ocean, along with plenty of sunscreen.

They were welcomed on their stops in places like San Salvador and Miami.

We've been so privileged; we did a journey no other human being has done,” Riann told us.

The trip was not without serious drama, like the night they capsized and feared they wouldn't make it.

The swell lifted their boat up and the boat was thrown. They lost everything on deck.

But they lived to row another day and Friday afternoon they finally completed their journey

“We're just grateful we don’t have to row again, our behinds are very sore” Riann said with a smile.

The couple says they'll likely plan another adventure in the future. To follow their trails, visit Facebook.com/TakeMe2NewYork
