DUNCANVILLE, Texas -
An off-duty Arlington police officer involved in a deadly shooting outside a restaurant in Duncanville has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The incident happened early Sunday morning in the parking lot of Pappadeaux's Seafood Kitchen on Highway 67.
Jindia Blount said she and her brother Juan May were celebrating a cousin's birthday with a group of about 25 people on a party bus.
An argument broke out and everyone got off the bus.
Blount said her brother and another man – now identified as a police officer – got into a fist fight. When it ended, the man walked over to his car.
"My brother was beginning to walk away, but then when he realized the man was probably going to get a gun, he tried to go and stop the man before he went to get the gun," Blount said. "The guy reached down in his car and he shot my brother."
May died at Methodist Charlton Medical Center.
There was no word of an arrest or action taken against the off-duty officer.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department is handling the shooting investigation. The Arlington Police Department is handling the administrative side of the case.
Arlington police said the officer has been with the department for eight years.
