Grosse Pointe Park could stop using Detroit water

Posted: Updated:
GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - Grosse Pointe Park has come up with a plan that could make it the next Michigan community to stop buying water from Detroit.

Greg Theokas, mayor pro tem, says the city is spending 1.4 million dollars a year to get its water from Detroit but could spend less with its own water plant at Windmill Pointe Park.

"Preliminarily, they estimate the funding cost at about $900,000 and the operational cost at about $350,000. So, essentially, that's a little less than what we're currently spending," says Theokas.

Darryl Latimer with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department says he understands the concern about water rates. Flint has already left the Detroit water system but Latimer says the city is trying to get rates under control. People just don't use water like they used to. People don't irrigate; people drink bottled water; and it had made an impact.

"Our sales have dropped 25, 30 percent over the last six to eight years. So, we are a fixed-cost entity. Even though you're producing less you still have all this infrastructure that you've invested in that you still have to continue to pay for," Latimer says.

Add to that the uncertain future for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department given the city's bankruptcy, and Theokas says it's worth looking at all the options.

Theokas says the studies being done should be concluded by the end of July but he doesn't anticipate anyone taking any action until the future of the water department is clear,  and in the end he's hoping to stick with Detroit.

"Our mission would be to stay with them and we're hopeful that whatever comes out of bankruptcy allows all the region to be well served in that regard with basically low cost water," Theokas says.

The city will definitely be staying with Detroit for sewerage services.
