State Trooper Hurt, Suspect Dead In Delaware Shootout

Posted: Updated:
KENT COUNTY, Del. - A Delaware State Police trooper was shot and a suspect was killed Wednesday morning during an exchange of gunfire in Kent County, officials say.

The shooting happened at the intersection of West Birdie Lane and Bayhill Road in Magnolia shortly before 7 a.m. after state police say the trooper was trying to apprehend a suspect in connection with an earlier domestic violence incident in the area.

According to police, there was a domestic fight around 12:30 a.m. on Bayhill Road, during which the suspect allegedly tried to strangle a woman. She and her children then went to their neighbors' to hide out.

Later, a trooper on patrol saw the suspect's vehicle on Route 1 and tried to pull him over. State police say that's when the suspect got out of his car and opened fire on the trooper, who fired back, killing the man.

The trooper was identified as 26-year-old Corp. Lloyd McCann, a four-year veteran of the force assigned to Troop 3 in Camden. He was wounded in the face and hand and taken to Kent General Hospital before being transferred by helicopter to Christiana Hospital. He's listed in stable condition.

The suspect was Dennis Hicks, 29, of Milford, Del., police said. He was pronounced dead at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital at approximately 8:47 a.m.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported that bullet holes were left in neighboring townhomes, in addition to evidence markers all over the ground. In all, 14 gunshots were exchanged, four fired by the suspect and 10 by the trooper.

SkyFOX over the scene showed a tow truck hauling away the damaged police and civilian vehicles.

State police say preliminary investigation shows a semiautomatic handgun recovered at the scene was reported stolen during a Smyrna residential burglary back in June 2013.

All roads in the area were closed as police investigated.

Schratwieser will have live reports on the shooting investigation later today.
