Lakewood’s Tent City is Down for the Count

Posted: Updated:
Lakewood, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The Tent City in Lakewood, New Jersey was an area where once over 100 homeless people lived out in the woods. People who lived in Tent City felt safe in the community; they cooked for each other, looked out for each other, and shared the same resources. However, now through a court appointed order, most of the people who used to inhabit the tents have been awarded one year of housing because there are no shelters for them to go to.

Joe, a veteran and Tent City former resident is one of the people who will be moving into an appointed apartment and has a job waiting for him with his brother’s cabinet company. Michael McNeil, the head of the NJSTEPS program, explained to Joe how the organization works to relocate people out of Tent City and into semi-permanent residencies.

“At least you are done here now, your brother is down here. You can get a job, and once your year is over, save a little bit of money, and then you can pay your rent, and then you can continue yourself,” McNeil told Joe of his new living situation.

Tent City used to be a small and intimate community. Now with its residents in appointed one year homes, Tent City is officially empty.

The Showboat and Trump Plaza Casinos are both scheduled to close next month and Mayor Don Guardian says that the city needs to figure out a way to change things if it wants to survive, but he said it’s not dead yet! “So Atlantic City may be 15 years after Vegas and I realized that it’s not all about casinos, it’s about the overall experience of coming to resorts,” he said.
