Out & About: Stand up paddleboarding with Detroit River Sports

Posted: Updated:
Stand up paddleboarding has been gaining popularity the past several years.  Alex Howbert, owner of Detroit River Sports says the attention may be due to the peaceful nature of the sport.

"It's a great way to get out on the water, get a great core workout without getting too crazy. It's a nice relaxing sport and a great way to just enjoy being outside," Howbert said.

To get started, you only need a few pieces of equipment--a paddleboard, paddle and life jacket.

You'll also need to get your stance down.  Howbert says you'll want to have your feet about shoulder width apart and your knees bent just slightly so you have good control over your body.

If you want to try paddleboarding, start in calm waters free of waves.

Detroit River Sports offers a variety of tours and rentals.  If you're up for the challenge, visit their website.

Parents and teachers know school supplies don't come cheap. Many teachers even buy school supplies out-of-pocket. But now, a new Detroit company is doing more than selling school supplies - they're also giving back.
