Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - It’s really a shame that the real world is not paying attention to the U.S. Senate race because the two camps are passionately engaged in a war of news releases, we-thought—you-should-know email alerts to the media, and a never ending back and forth as they scratch for some advantage in this bitter battle to replace Carl Levin.

All this tit for tat does justify the hefty salaries of all the campaign staffers who grind this stuff out at a lightening pace but that's about all it is doing at this read.

Without anyone really knowing it, the unofficial kick-off was on Mackinac Island where GOP candidate Terri Lynn Land and Democratic candidate Gary Peters were in the same building but not on the same platform. Some foolish folks attending the event actually thought the two would appear together.

Ms. Land would have none of that and the Peters folks banged that for all it was worth as it played into their message that she was not only avoiding her opponent but the media, too.

Then there was her alleged “melt-down” in front of the cameras and the Peter’s team banged that, too.

In a desperate effort to regain some lost ground, the Land team told reporters that Mr. Peters had refused to answer the cap and trade issue pending in D.C.  They were right but it got very little coverage.

Fast forward to the breathless news release from the Land camp suggesting that her opponent was “Mum on the latest IRS scandal” while taking money from an IRS union.

Then using a surrogate the Peter’s side blasted Ms. Land for blasting Peters for being in Washington when he should have been at a small business function in Lansing.

Ms. Land’s campaign thought it was curious that just the day before, Mr. Peters called for face to face debates, and now given a chance to meet with Ms. Land, he was “skipping the event…”  There was not going to be a debate, but that was left out of the release.

And additionally the release did not reveal is that the Congressman  was not there because he was in Washington voting on a military spending bill.  His media folks sent in a former Marine to lambaste Land for “putting politics before the troops.”

The GOP candidate, according to media reports, put on a better performance at the business event recovering nicely from her gig on the island.

Then on Monday the barrage of “you-did-this-when-you-should-have-done-that continued.

But all the energy is probably not having much impact on voters who are more concerned about getting the cottage ready for 4th of July.
