There's a new way to save money using social media. Consumer reporter Steve Noviello takes a look at the trend of hosting yard sales online.
Suzi Petroff has dirt under her nails and cash in her pocket. The former teacher says she loves DIY projects.
And, she's found a new twist on treasure hunting that's saved her nearly $40,000. Petroff is part of the Park Cities Online Yard Sale Facebook group.
There are similar Facebook groups representing almost every community across North Texas. The yards are virtual, but the sales and savings are quite real.
"The wine rack was $25," she said. "I bought my husband a ski jacket on her for $25!"
Petroff said lately she's been shopping for second-hand pieces to stage her house, which is for sale. But, she once found Loubutin slingbacks for $200. They retail for nearly $900.
In most cases the Facebook groups require membership approval and the sellers want cash. Petroff said there's also very little haggling and the items don't sit for long.
But it's a way to give someone's gently used items new life at a great price.
"I'm selling items. I'm buying items. I'm hooked!" she said. "I love a good bargain."
