Crowley hit-and-run driver leaves bicyclist hospitalized

Posted: Updated:
A Crowley man is recovering after the driver of an SUV hit him while he was on his bicycle and then fled the scene.

The crash left the bicyclist, Bruce Brown, with five broken ribs and several scrapes and bruises on his arms and legs.

Brown says he was riding his bike through Crowley on Tuesday night and admits he was going against traffic on the narrow shoulder on the westbound side of FM 1187. When his bike’s chain broke, he stopped, pulled to the side of the road, saw no headlights of oncoming traffic and bent down to fix the chain.

That’s when the SUV slammed into him.

"I remember being thrown,” said Brown. “The impact was pretty hard. Me and the bike went, I can't say how many feet. I just know that after that, I couldn't stand up. Breathing had become very difficult for me.”

Brown says it was a light or beige-colored SUV that hit him. He says he lifted his head up just enough to watch whoever hit him back up, drive around himself and the bike and speed off northbound on Business 1187 into Crowley.

Crowley police are trying to find the hit-and-run SUV with some sort of front end damage, but they don't have a license plate, make or model.

"We don't know if it was the actual hood, the front grill, the front side near the tire, what part of the vehicle, but we do know it was the front of the vehicle that struck the victim,” said Officer C.C. Meadows with the Crowley Police Department.

Brown says he’ll have to get some more X-rays, and he may end up having a broken leg as well.

"And to the persons that hit me and kept on going, I say, take a good look at yourself and ask for a moment, ‘What kind of person am I?’”
