New police unit aimed to increase safety in areas near Silver Line

Posted: Updated:
TYSONS CORNER, Va. -

In just a few weeks on July 27, Metro's new Silver Line will open in Western Fairfax County, but along with the anticipation comes concerns about crime.

Now, Fairfax County police have formed a new unit called the Tysons Urban Team to help increase safety.

The nine member crew was created last November with a focus on retail crime, but the team will be working the entire area, in cars, on bikes and on foot helping to keep things safe. They will also be working with Metro Transit Police.

Second Lt. Charles Riddle heads the team and says they have been studying techniques in other urbanized areas.

Shoppers say they are glad to see the increased security.

The Silver Line will mean convenience for more people and they say having extra police is a welcome sight.

"I'm glad to see there will be more police to help enforce the area,” says Torrest Bates.

Prem Periyasam agreed.

β€œIt definitely seems like a good thing,” he says.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors agreed to fund the nine new positions making the team possible.
