Boy invents gadget to prevent hot car deaths

Posted: Updated:
There are far too many accidental deaths involving children in hot cars, but one Tennessee boy is trying to prevent it from happening again with his invention called the EZ Baby Saver.

It all started with a contest and now it could be a life saver.

"I read about a story in our neighborhood, a women who left her child in a hot car, and I was also thinking of entering the rubber band contest. I thought this was a good time to use both ideas and find a way to stop that problem," said Andrew Pelham.

The rubber band contest challenged kids to create something out of rubber bands.

In 5th grade, Pelham created the EZ Baby Saver: something to remind parents when their child is in the back seat.

"It's a device that as u strap your child into your car, you would flip it over your seat and then strap it to your door, so when you got out of the car it would be blocking your path out of the car so you can't get out without undoing and remembering my child's in the car," said Pelham.

Pelham's invention earned him runner-up in the engineering and science division.

He's posted step-by-step instructions online of how to make the EZ Baby Saver at home.

"I just hope that if you don't even make it yourself maybe the idea will help raise awareness, people be a bit more careful with their children," said Pelham. "I just hope that if I can maybe save one life out of this then I'd be successful."

He's not done inventing yet; he says he has more in the works.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
