Image On Social Media Sparks Resignation Of Class President

Lawrenceville, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The former student body president at the $53,000 per-year Lawrenceville School in New Jersey is being called divisive and even racist after posting a picture that she said represents the “typical Lawrenceville boy”.

Maya Peterson was told to resign her position as class president or face punishment when she posted a picture wearing a Yale sweatshirt, LL Bean duck boots and holding a hockey stick. She hash-tagged the picture on Instagram with: “Romney 2016”, “Confederate” and “I Peaked in High School”.

Filmmaker Andre Lee has made a couple of films addressing both racism and the issues of minorities at elite schools. He said that this is being overblown and that nothing about Peterson’s picture is painful imagery.

“It was a mistake on her part being in the political position at the school I think to do that, but I don’t think she’s a racists and horrible person. She’s a kid and she did what kids do, they do silly stupid stuff sometimes,” he explained.

Peterson has since resigned from her position, but now the question becomes, does making people uncomfortable addressing these issues make you a hateful person or a leader who is sparking discussion?

Some residents of West New York, New Jersey are happy with their beautiful views of Manhattan, but aren’t too happy about the noise that is coming over from the city. Residents who live at the Hudson Club apartment complex at Port Imperial say that the music that reportedly comes from a new concert hall at Pier 97 across the Hudson River in New York City is affecting their quality of life.
