U.S. Soccer goalkeeper was the unquestioned star of the national team’s 2-1 loss to Belgium in the World Cup on Tuesday. Howard’s record-setting 16 saves made him a social media star, inspiring a slew of memes, photoshopped images and trending hashtags.
The fervor grew so much that Howard’s Wikipedia page was changed to list him as the United States’ Secretary of Defense.
On Wednesday, the real defense secretary, Chuck Hagel, placed a call to Howard.
The Pentagon released a photo of Hagel chatting on the phone with Howard and the following statement:
“Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel called U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard to thank him for defending the United States of America at the World Cup. Secretary Hagel congratulated Howard on his record-breaking game and a great run in Brazil. He invited Howard and the entire team to come to the Pentagon later this year. He told Howard that with some training, he could someday become the real secretary of defense.”
