Airstream trailers make comeback near St. Cloud

Posted: Updated:
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KMSP) -

They're an iconic, silver sign of summer -- and the airstream trailers that everyone has seen rolling down the Interstate are making a bit of a comeback in a town just outside of St. Cloud, Minn.

On an 80-acre parcel of land in central Minnesota, there's a place that inspires reflection among a certain set of people. Even though Jessie Kresa just bought a 33-foot airstream trailer this spring, she's already wearing her love for it on her sleeve. Since refurbishing it and moving to the airstream-only RV park near Clear Lake last month, she's definitely become a happy camper.

"I'm living the dream in this thing," she said. "Meeting a lot of new people."

The park was created in the early 1970s by airstream owners who lived in Minnesota and wanted a place to call their own near the Twin Cities. Now, people come from all across the country -- even across the pond -- to enjoy the Land of 10,000 lakes. Campers buy lots to park their airstreams on between April and October, and the site has its own club house, pool and 9-hole golf course.

"It's got the ability to be towed, it's got the ability to be enjoyed, and it's got a great resale value," John Tetzlaff said. "You know, there is nothing else like it."

Even though Kresa is new to the caravan club, she understands why the American icons are so riveting.

"They're a good investment," she said. "You can put a lot into it, but you are going to get a lot back by the memories you make."
