Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in Joliet

Posted: Updated:
JOLIET, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Will County Health Department reported a batch of mosquitoes from a monitoring site in southwest suburban Joliet has tested positive for West Nile virus.

The samples were collected Tuesday and tested positive for the virus on Wednesday and Thursday, a statement from the Will County Health Department said. The health department said Will County is one of at least nine Illinois counties to report positive samples of the virus for 2014.

A mosquito batch collected in Will County on June 17, 2014 from Naperville also tested positive, the statement said. The Joliet site is one of 14 mosquito monitoring facilities operated by the county.

No human West Nile cases have been reported in Illinois this year, but activity in bird and mosquito populations typically foreshadow human activity, the statement said. Illinois reported 117 human cases and 11 fatalities in 2013, according to the Will County Health Department.

Last year, Will County reported its first West Nile-positive mosquitoes on July 8 after samples from a Bolingbrook site tested positive. There were no cases of human infection from Will County in 2013, the statement said.

West Nile virus is a potential fatal human infection transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, the statement said.

Will County residents can report the location of dead birds to the Health Department’s West Nile virus Information Line at (815) 740-7631.
