CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A Cook County jail inmate has been charged with trying to hire someone to kill a 15-year-old who he allegedly sexually assaulted.
The Cook County Sheriff’s office developed information that Everardo Salinas, 29, had reached out to another inmate to attempt to find a hitman to murder the juvenile victim in his pending aggravated criminal sex abuse case, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Salinas has been in jail for the sexual assault since May 2013 and is being held on a $400,000 bond, the sheriff’s office said.
In bond court Wednesday, prosecutors said that on June 28 Salinas had a visit with an individual he thought to be the hit man, the statement said. However, the man was an undercover officer and, according to prosecutors, Salinas offered to pay him $2,500 to have the 15-year-old killed, police said.
Judge Laura Sullivan denied bond at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building Wednesday, the statement said.
