CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

This week we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act being signed into law. It was the most monumental event for the African American community since President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Friday morning, we took a look back at the movement through the eyes of Secretary of State Jesse White, a man who's incredible life and journey have been dedicated to serving the people of Illinois.

After growing up in the state of Illinois, a young Jesse White experienced the ugly reality of the segregated south back in the 1950s. White attended Alabama State on a basketball scholarship about a decade before the Civil Rights Act laid the foundation for equality.

FOX 32 Good Day Chicago anchor Jon Kelley has more on the life of this incredible man. Click play above to hear his story.
