Police investigate increase in copper thefts

Posted: Updated:

DeKalb County Police have seen a big increase in copper thefts throughout the county.

Police say in the past few week, thieves have hit three churches and three libraries, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Pastor Richard Barclay with the Hillcrest Church of Christ says the thefts impacted their missionary work, a basketball camp for the deaf and vacation bible school.

Surveillance photos show the thieves in the act.

A library on Wesley Chapel Road was forced to close its doors after crooks to air conditioning units from the property.

DeKalb County Police say they will not tolerate this and are taking it very seriously. Police issued a search warrant at a DeKalb County home Monday and found AC units which they believe are stolen.

Police tell FOX 5 they think they are close to identifying two suspects.
