Bucks County Repair Men Facing Dozens Of Fraud And Theft Related Charges

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

A Bucks County father and son are accused of using their construction business to swindle more than $700,000 from several homeowners and businesses.

Investigators said the scheme went on for three years.

Court records show John and Ryan Thayer often targeted elderly victims.

The documents said they also went after people who had recent fire or weather damage to their property.

"The tree that came down was right here and it was that big,” Bill Vogt said.

Vogt showed us where a large tree fell on top of his Feasterville home during a strong storm in August of last year.

That’s when he said he and his wife first met Ryan Thayer of Hammertime Construction and Demolition.

"He's probably on a scanner or something like an ambulance chaser,” Vogt said.

Police said Hammertime Construction started the work, but took $25,000 and ran off without finishing the repairs.

At 79, Vogt's having to do some of the work himself.

"I wanted to retire, but now I'm still working because I'm trying to get all this done,” he said.

Investigators said the Vogt’s are one of several customers the Levittown based business took for 771 thousand dollars across Bucks County.

The Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection said they've received an alarming number of complaints about Hammertime in the past year and a half.

They said the best thing to do is not rush into signing anything after a disaster strikes.

"I'm sure there's an urge to do that, but you should step back, maybe talk with a family member since you're in such a vulnerable position,” Director Michael Bannon said.

We tried to talk with John Thayer about the allegations, but he wouldn't answer.

Some of his neighbors we spoke to off camera told us he's getting what he deserves.

Others came to his defense.

"He's a good guy. I'm sure this is just a misunderstanding and things will get cleared up eventually,” Nick Graff said.

Vogt now hopes he'll get his money back.

"I'd be satisfied if I could $15,000 or $18,000 back. I'd be breaking even and I'd be happy, but I want to see him go to jail too,” he said.

Both father and son have already faced a judge, but are not in jail, because they were given unsecured bonds.

They're facing dozens of theft and fraud related charges.
