Prior Lake must drop 1.8 feet to hit flood stage

Posted: Updated:
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) -

The heavy rains that came through in June are still causing problems on Prior Lake, especially after Thursday brought another 2-inch downpour that has many people feeling set back.

Overall, the lake level has dropped nearly a half a foot since it crested two weeks ago; however, the high water is still threatening 35 to 40 homes. In one neighborhood, volunteers stuffed 5,000 sandbags, but some residents are still only able to get to their houses by boat.

Highway 21 is still closed, and as far as recreational boating goes, there won't be any wake allowed until the lake drops at least another two feet.

"Normally, this is beach right here," Matt Brei, who organized the sandbagging effort, told Fox 9 News. "All of that water back that way is not supposed to be here, and it's still got to go. We still have multiple feet -- two more feet -- to go down before we can even create a wake on the late, so we're not out of the woods by any means."

Once the water drops, the City Council is considering extending the no-wake zone to give lakefront homeowners a chance to make shoreline repairs.
