Touch and go chess becomes popular downtown attraction

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 26 foot long touch-and-go chess table has become a popular attraction on Michigan Avenue - and it has been around for longer than you might expect.

You can find the table downtown at Michigan and Jackson. Each day, you will find anyone from kids to lawyers stopping what they’re doing to play "touch and go chess."

But it’s much more than that: This is Chicago.

If you stroll down Michigan Avenue on a sunny day, it’s bound to catch your eye – the bright colors, the hip music, and of course, the unmissable cluster of people gathered around the chess sets.

For the past 16 years, Cecil Locke provided this locally famous touch and go chess table for the passing minds of The Loop.

Though, like the best things, it’s gotten better over time.

He humbly requests a $3 donation for all-day play, though he can often be seen allowing passing children to simply enjoy the game. After all, this life-long Chicagoan, hailing from the South Side, knows what the game is really all about.

This is what chicago is all about.

So come on over, it’s your move.
