Ventura: Yearly earnings drop from $1M to $100,000 because of 'American Sniper'

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Former Minn. Jesse Ventura returned to the witness stand Monday morning in his defamation lawsuit against the estate of former Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle.

Ventura told the jury on Monday his yearly earnings dropped from $1 million to $100,000 after the book started getting publicity. While he was on the stand, Ventura was asked why he had never sued any of the other authors who had written unauthorized books about him, he had a simple answer.

"None of those other books were on national television making millions of dollars by accusing me of treason," he said.

Even though the story, "Punching Out  Scruff Face," is only two pages, Ventura contends that his career came to a screeching halt. During cross-examination, Kyle's attorneys played clips of Ventura from a year before the book came out in an attempt to suggest that he was already damaging his own reputation and that is the reason his career declined.

Kyle was killed in 2013 by a veteran he was mentoring. His book, "American Sniper: An Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” details an incident in 2006 where he punches a man called “Scruff Face.” Ventura’s name is never used in the book, but Kyle later identified him in radio and TV interviews. Ventura contends the fight never happened.

On Friday, Ventura attempted to establish the fact that he'd never say "you deserve to lose a few" as Kyle wrote in his book, mentioning his appreciation and pride as a member of the military and SEALs underwater demolition team. Ventura is seeking damages, but said his primary reason for the lawsuit is to clear his name.

Next, Ventura's wife, Terri, testified that her husband never mentioned the alleged altercation Kyle wrote about and never had a black eye or other physical evidence of a punch.
