Elderly Detroit man fearful after he was assaulted and robbed, fires shot at news crew

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - This is not the outcome anyone wanted.

An 88-year-old man who police say was tortured and beaten by a group of armed robbers last week is now in handcuffs in the back of a Detroit police car. Confused and disoriented, he is a victim for a second time.

It began when the man, whose name will not be used, was attacked Thursday evening when he was lured to the door by a woman asking for help. When he opened the door, two men rushed in.

He was beaten, tied up with a phone cord and robbed.

The man wouldn't open the door for Fox 2's Maurielle Lue on Monday but he was still willing to share his story with her through the door. The life-long Detroiter is now suspicious of everyone.

Despite the news van and Lue's microphone, he was convinced she was not who she said she was and accused her of setting him up for another robbery.

After the interview he closed the door but Lue's crew returned to the scene just in time to witness WXYZ-TV's crew running from the house. Then, they heard a single gun shot.

Police approached the house with guns drawn. The man screamed at officers, who eventually coaxed him down and cuffed him.

Disoriented from old age or perhaps the beating he received last week, police say he denied having a gun. Police say they couldn't locate the gun because of conditions inside his home.

He was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for a medical evaluation and, at last check, was not under arrest, but this is not the ending anyone wanted.

A man blessed enough to see 88 years is now too scared to live at all.
