N. Texans learn they were theft ring victims

Posted: Updated:
A recent theft ring bust in Balch Springs uncovered an assortment of stolen goods, including guns, cars, household appliances and more.

So many items were found that investigators are still trying to inventory all of them and get in touch with victims.

One woman had her entire home cleaned out.

Michelle Houston says she came home from an out-of-town trip to see that thieves had broken through a glass door to get into her Kaufman County home. It was a second blow for her – she’d lost her job the month before.

Her boyfriend, Kevin Lanning, says the thieves loaded up his 28-foot trailer with anything and everything, including furniture, toiletries and all of Houston's son's clothes.

“We just couldn't believe that someone would take long enough to clean out the entire house,” said Lanning. “Did they know we were gone somehow? That was the big thing. Did someone know that we were gone?”

Police recently arrested one suspect, 33-year-old Mindy Brayden.

Police pulled her over for a traffic violation. She'd already been on their radar as someone they wanted to talk to, and they began questioning her about reports of stolen property at her Balch Springs house.

They say they got written consent to search the home and found numerous stolen items.

The week before, police tried to pull over Braden’s boyfriend, but he led them on a chase. He fled from his car and hasn't been seen since.

Police also say they've connected a stash of weapons to the suspects. A total of 28 were found, including shotguns and hunting rifles that were recovered from a storage unit in Duncanville.

Police also say they recovered 14 items from a house on Seagoville Road in Dallas, including ATVs and classic cars.

Houston says she's documented everything that was stolen, and is getting by for now with the help from the community.

“I'm sure the law will handle them,” she said. “I just pray that they get help, because obviously, they are not right.”
