Tiger Stadium site redevelopment plans move ahead

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Right now the baseball diamond at the old Tiger Stadium is being used by little leaguers and even some vintage baseball teams. But that could change, even before this season is over.

Tim Richey, CEO of the Police Athletic League, says there's a preliminary agreement with Detroit officials to build a PAL headquarters and youth field at the site, which means the ground's current status as an informal public space is almost over.

"We're going to operate that site and the goal will be to get as many of our kids and families a chance to be out there and play as we can, although I'm sure there will be opportunities for other folks to get involved. They can get in touch with us and we'll arrange and coordinate with them, but the number one priority will be for Detroit kids to have a chance to play at the same place where all these greats played," says Richey.

Two additional areas will be kept open for possible future residential, retail or commercial redevelopment.

Tiger Stadium opened in 1912 as Navin Field. The Tigers left for Comerica Park after the 1999 season. The last portion of the stadium was demolished in 2009, but people still use the field.
