2 shot inside car; Phoenix police search for suspects

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Nearly two dozen shots were fired at a car near 16th Street and Roeser early Wednesday morning.  Two people -- one of them a teenager, were hit by the bullets.

Police say so far, the shooting appears random and they're asking for help to track down the suspects.

"We heard the gunshots.. it sounded like someone knocking on the back door," said Stephen McKnight, a witness.

Residents on Chambers Street didn't have to look far to find out what caused the commotion.  Just a few feet away from their front doors, a car was riddled with bullet holes.

"We've been living here for so many years," said Pat Mendoza.  50 years ago, the south Phoenix neighborhood was what she calls safe and this incident is unsettling to her.

"It scares you.. it scares you, it really does," she said.

Investigators describe a car to car shooting at the intersection of 16th Street and Roeser around 3 a.m. with only the suspects opening fire.  The victims' vehicle was stopped half a mile down the road.

According to officers, there were 10 to 15 rounds found inside the car and 23 shell casings found outside near 16th Street and Roeser.

A teenaged boy in the backseat was shot and so was the young woman driving the vehicle.

According to police and witnesses, the woman in the front seat was out of the car when officers arrived at the scene.

The witness who was initially described as uncooperative was held at the scene throughout the morning.  Police hope she will eventually talk and give them enough information to figure out what happened.  They also say it's possible the witness didn't know anything.

The victims were taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Anyone with information about this case can call Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS or the Phoenix Police Dept. at (602) 262-6151.
