Good Samaritans rescue man from burning car

Posted: Updated:
ALVARADO, Texas - Several North Texans are being praised for pulling an elderly man out of his burning car after an accident near Alvarado.

The man’s car crashed Tuesday night in the 9000 block of FM 917. The car that 70-year-old James Rhodes was driving swerved off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.

Morgan Moore said she and her husband, John, heard a loud boom outside their home. Neighbor Corey Davis also rushed to help.

Davis heard popping noises and feared the car was going to explode. Inside, Rhodes was unconscious.

The Good Samaritans bashed in the car's windows in with rocks and got Rhodes out. They even used a fire extinguisher to fight the flames until help arrived.

Soon, up to a dozen others showed up with water bottles, helping with whatever they could think of.

Neighbors have complained to TxDOT about the curve where the crash happened, asking for guardrails or warning signs. So far, they haven’t gotten anything, though.

“Something needs to be done,” said Davis.

Rhodes remains in serious condition with a broken hip, ankle and back fractures.

A TxDOT spokesperson says a speed study was conducted on FM 917, and just this week, it was decided to lower the speed limit on it from 60 mph to 55.

There’s no word on guardrails or new signage yet, but the spokesperson says TxDOT plans to monitor the area.
