Clinton Twp. neighbors want convicted hoarder's property cleaned up again

Posted: Updated:
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Among the manicured homes in one Clinton Township neighborhood, one clearly sticks out on River Hill Drive. It's a home that Brandy Steffens has lived next to for 14 years, and now she says she is at her wits end.

"The rats; the smell; the toxic waste; the barrels; the garbage; the man hasn't put garbage out in seven years. I don't know what his problem is. Never seen garbage in seven years, but he continues to go in the house," she says.

The man who lives there is a known hoarder. Neighbors complain he has turned his house into a dangerous, overgrown eyesore surrounded by junk he's accumulated over decades.

Documents show he was prosecuted in 2002 and pleaded no contest. Old pictures in Fox 2's Taryn Asher's report show the mess he was forced to clean up but we're told he's since reverted back to his old ways.

Steffens and her neighbors claim they have been fighting the township to clean up this mess for years, yet nothing changes.

"We are tired or their same song and dance and crying wolf that they're going to do something," Steffens says.

"Make a lot of promises but, at this point, nothing has really surfaced. Okay, so, we're hoping they'd move a little faster, bureaucracy is what it is," says neighbor Martin Dzon

Neighbors have written letters. Clinton Township police have been called. The man has been ticketed by the township numerous times. The house has even been condemned. You can see where the man apparently ripped the orange sticker off the door.

But the township supervisor says after the case is handed over to the courts there's nothing else they can do. A judge has not yet ordered for this home, which has been deemed hazardous, to be torn down.

"The courts could do a little bit more," says Clinton Township Supervisor Robert Cannon. "Unfortunately, people who do that. We don't like it. We do everything we can as a township, taking every ordinance we have and enforcing it."

But Steffens wants to know what it is going to take to get action because she says no one deserves to live next to this.

"You can work with me or you can work against me, 'cause I'm done," she says.

Fox 2's Taryn Asher tried to speak with the homeowner but reports he would not come to the door. But she was told the homeowner also wouldn't come to the door for the township and police who tried to serve him a bench warrant for his arrest on July 9.

The next step in all of this is really unclear at this point.
