A Canadian tour bus carrying more than 50 people has rolled over on the Northway in the Adirondacks, killing a teenager and injuring several people, officials said.

New York state police spokeswoman Darcy Wells said the bus rolled over Friday morning between exits 29 and 30 in Essex County.

A Canadian teenager was partially ejected from the bus and then pinned underneath it, according to Maj. Richard Smith of the State Police. Rescuers used jacks to lift the bus off Chelssy Mercier, 14, of Quebec, and a state trooper used an automatic defibrillator to try to revive her, but she died, police said. She was traveling with her mother.

Police said that 41 people were considered "walking wounded" patients, 10 were hurt but not critically, and three were needed immediate transport to a hospital, according to the county EMS coordinator.

The tour operator said the bus traveling from Quebec City to New York City. Josiane Grimard of JaimonVoyage.com said the bus crashed at 7:30 a.m. She had no word on the cause. She said the bus was owned by a subcontractor.

The driver of the bus was a 61-year-old Canadian man who has passed three inspections as a bus drive in the last year, police said. Authorities do not have any reason to believe he has a problem with his driver's credentials, police said.

A number of local rescue squads have been sent to the scene, where the bus is on its side in the median.

North Hudson is 90 miles north of Albany.
