American Victim Of Malaysia Airlines Downed Jet Has Ties To South Jersey

Posted: Updated:

"As a grandparent you hope that none of your children or grandchildren will go before you and now it has happened. It's the first time it has happened in our family," said Ronald Schansman. He is tearful and heartbroken after learning his family is one of many tragically touched by the downed Malaysia Airlines jet in Ukraine Thursday.  His 19-year old grandson Quinn was killed and the only American on board.

"It's enormous. We didn't understand it . It's so senseless what happened," he said. Schansman got
the devastating phone call Thursday afternoon from his son Thomas who was on vacation with his wife and youngest son in Indonesia. Quinn was to eventually meet up with them there before continuing the family vacation in Bali. But that wouldn't happen.

"We all want to live our children out but this time it didn't work unfortunately," said Schansman. Quinn
had dual citizenship. His parents are Dutch but were born in New York. They lived in America five years while his father was with the Dutch Embassy but they eventually moved back to Holland.  Quinn was a student at Amsterdam University studying International Business Administration when he was killed. His grandfather lives in Holland but was visiting his sister in Woodbury New Jersey when we spoke with him.

"He was a big boy. He was very lively and we all will miss him. Now of course the whole family is in mourning," said Schansman.
