Monticello doctor killed in crash with motorcycle, golf cart

Posted: Updated:
MONTICELLO, Minn. (KMSP) -

He brought hundreds of lives into the world, but the community of Monticello is now mourning the death of a popular doctor who died in a bizarre accident over the weekend.

"Great bedside presence," former patient Laura Worley recalled. "So calming and reassuring with everything."

Even though 7 years have passed since Dr. Eric Lefebvre delivered Worley's son, she still remembers the precious moments with her OB/GYN before her baby went on the scale.

"He was just an outstanding kind of guy," she said.

There are many stories like Worley's in the northwest metro communities of Buffalo and Monticello because Lefebvre was a wildly popular physician in the two communities for 17 years. It's no exaggeration to say he cared for hundreds of expectant mothers and their children.

"It's a huge loss," said Douglas Hanson, CEO of the clinics where Lefebvre practiced for nearly two decades. "Just a really smooth guy -- steady, very caring, low-key personality, unassuming. Just the kind of physician that really appealed to the patients, a very sincere man."

Lefebvre died on Saturday afternoon on a picturesque portion of Wright County Highway 2 along Lake Francis.

"It's terrible," said neighbor Pat King. "Absolutely terrible -- you grieve right away. Feel awful it happened."

Lefebvre was on his 2014 Ducati Monster motorcycle, and one witness told Fox 9 News the vehicle appeared to be new and may have had a temporary registration card. Spray paint shows where he collided with a golf cart in the southbound lane. Apparently, the operator of the golf cart, Chaska man Korie Schiel, 39, was trying to make a left into one of the driveways, and neighbors in the area say several households use the carts to get around their properties and to and from the lake. Some witnesses reported seeing a helmet at the scene, but officials have not said whether or not he was wearing one.

"There are a few golf carts. Not a lot, but a few," Wendell King explained. "I don't see them on the roads, more on the back and side streets -- but not on main highways, normally."

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, golf carts are not allowed on roads with motor vehicles, and Wright County authorities are doing a full crash investigation; however, the loss of a doctor, husband, and father of four has left many hurting this summer weekend.

Officials said an investigation into the crash could take several more days before the case is sent to the Wright County attorney for charging review.
