Christine Jones border ad, is it realistic?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The Border Battle has been a huge issue as we head towards the primaries next month.

It's the centerpiece of an ad for Christine Jones who is running for Governor, but how realistic is it?

It's a point of pride with the Jones campaign, getting specific on the border. And Christine Jones, a political newcomer, has come up with a detailed plan on border security.

Her immigration ad is an attempt to stuff all of the key parts of her immigration strategy into thirty seconds.

"I will deploy 1,200 troops to the border, use technology to monitor who is coming and going, finish the fence, and send Obama the bill. Laws will be enforced, no priority, no amnesty, and no more excuses," said Jones during the ad.

Could an Arizona Governor send 1,200 troops to the border? Professor Steven Gonzales says yes. "They could not interfere in any way with the federal mission; the state has no control over the international border," said Gonzalez.

How about finishing the fence? Christine Jones said she'd only do a partial fence where people tend to cross. "It is a Swiss cheese type of fence, but we don't need the great wall of Mexico, we need to finish the fence in strategic areas," said Jones.

Who is going to pay for all of this? Evidently a certain man who lives in the White House.

FOX 10 asked Jones about her notion of sending Obama the bill and why she neglected to call him Barack Obama or President Obama. Jones replied, "fair point." When asked if this was to fire up the base by not saying his full name or title she replied. "I very much maintain respect for the Presidency, and I think all Americans should," she said.

Professor Gonzalez said  trying to get President Obama, or any President to pay the bill is now how the political system is set up.

"Congress has to decide whether the money will be appropriated to pay these bills. Congress is deadlocked, so it's just a gimmick, it's smoke and mirrors really," said Gonzalez.

It doesn't matter which party you're in, the President doesn't pay the bills. Democrat Janet Napolitano sent a bill to Republican President George W. Bush to pay for border enforcement when she was governor, it was not paid.

In her ad, Jones said "no amnesty", but Governor's don't have the power to set immigration policy. The U.S. Constitution says that is the federal government's job. Christine Jones full plan is available on her campaign website.
