GILBERT, Ariz. - Gilbert Police are recommending charges be filed against a Gilbert woman who had allegedly been hoarding cats. On Monday, investigators pulled 79 cats from the home near Ray Road & Val Vista. The cats are now recovering at local shelters.

Police say the cats were hiding inside the walls of the home. They appear to be in good shape, but Animal Care & Control tells us it's not clear when or if they'll be put up for adoption.

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control rescued all 79 of the cats. "At this point they are not the type of cats we could put up for general adoption," said Melissa Gable.

The cats don't appear to be overly friendly, they were found in a Gilbert home Monday afternoon, one of them even bit a rescuer.

"They are not the kind of cats you can adopt and expect them to come home, sit in your lap, cuddle, and be happy," she said.

According to public records the home sold at a foreclosure auction last week. According to police when the new owners entered the home to start renovations they found all the cats and the home's former owner inside.

A neighbor sent us photos inside the home which shows the new owner has their work cut out for them.

"The guy hauling his stuff out said the cat feces was waist deep in the bathtub, and knee high in the bathroom," said a neighbor.

While rescuers will work to find homes for as many cats as possible, the reality is most will likely have to be put down.

"We are taking in 100 animals every single day, and these animals are not really that adoptable, we have other animals at our shelters that are healthy and friendly, the kind that will jump in your lap and purr, and be friendly. We can't even find homes for those animals," said Gable.

Later this week, animal care and control hopes to put many of the cats up for adoption at no charge. As for the criminal charges against the owner, Gilbert Police say they will send the case to the county attorney.
