Kid in a hot car: what should you do?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - And, of course, when it gets this hot in the valley there's always the danger of kids being left inside hot cars, it's already happened in other parts of the country.

In Texas, a mom locked her kids inside the car with her baby strapped into a car seat. She asked people in the parking lot to break a window on her car. It was a scorching hot day, and a tow truck would not be able to get there for more than an hour to unlock the car.

It took several swings to finally break the window, she climbed in and pulled the baby out who was doing fine.

So what do you do if you accidentally lock your child in the car or come across a baby left behind. Should you bust the window?

FOX 10 went to the Phoenix Fire Training Academy and talked with firefighters about what to do if you see a child alone in a hot vehicle. It's not an easy as you think to break out a window.

Firefighters say the first thing you want to do is try to get the kid out of the car and call 911.

"If a kid is in distress, you have to break a window, that's what you do. You have to break the window, you can't put a value on the window; you cannot compare the value of a window to life," said Capt. Ruben Saavedra with Phoenix Fire.

But the windows of the car are designed to hold up during an accident. If you don't have the right technique or experience, you may have a hard time.

There are devices available such as a window punch that has a mechanism that when triggered punches the window shattering it.

"Obviously when we break a window, the window is designed to stay in place, they're going to shatter and stay into small pieces. We want to take a safety precaution and use the other window, that way if glass did fall it won't fall on the animal or child in the car," said Saavedra.

FOX 10 asked Saavedra whether someone could use a hammer to break a window. A direct hit to the center of the window had little result, but when you hit the corner of the window it shattered.
