Lollapalooza ticket scam artist targets victims nationwide

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Lollapalooza is the hottest ticket in town, but don't get stuck paying for a ticket that doesn't exist.

“I gave him $510 trusting that he would give me the tickets,” said Andrea Carro, who never got the tickets she was promised.

Andrea and her mother are angry and upset, and with good reason. A tempting Craiglist ad for a pair of Lollapalooza tickets left Andrea burned by a man who identified himself as Donald Odell.

After posting their story on, they realized they were not alone.

Josh Kuipers said he was scammed by the same individual, who he gave $325 to -- in person -- but never got the promised tickets mailed to him.

“On the day of, he came to meet for the passes, he pretty much stood me up and stopped taking my phone calls, and all my text messages,” said Kuipers. “So what I did was posted an ad on craigslist warning people not to buy from this guy, And the response I've gotten is just overwhelming.”

Now, more than two dozen people have come forward from seven states, all with similar stories of money wired to Odell -- or checks sent -- but no tickets.

Odell even provided people like Kuipers pictures of his state ID trying to prove his legitimacy and good intentions. The problem, though, is the address traces back to a home at 4435 South Sawyer. The landlord told FOX 32 News he evicted Odell more than two years ago after Odell failed to pay $4500 in rent.

Norine Carro, mother of Andrea, has filed a police report with the Chicago police department and calls Odell a scam artist.

“I want him arrested, I want him put in jail, I want to try to get our money back, $510 is a lot to a 17-year-old,” said Norine

Kuipers added, “I've pretty much written off getting my money back, money comes and goes, but you know if we can stop this guy from scamming another 20 people or even more, then that would be great.”

Norine, though, has this warning to anyone buying tickets on Craigslist for Lollapalooza or any other event.

“Check them out, do not send the money unless you have the tickets in hand or you're going to meet them and get the tickets in hand,” Norine added.
