Fulton County teacher dies after car plunges into Gwinnett County pond

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. -

Authorities say a Fulton County teacher died after her vehicle plunged into a Gwinnett County pond Wednesday morning.

Laura Jones Tavel, 53, was driving the vehicle that crashed on the 5000 block of Peachtree Corners Circle.

Fire officials say witnesses reported seeing Tavel and the vehicle quickly disappear into the water.

Investigators say Tavel was driving a silver 2000 Honda CR-V and was traveling east on Peachtree Corners Circle. Tavel veered to the right, off of the road into a pond and was unable to exit the car.

Rescue crews and a dive team were dispatched to the scene, but they were unable to rescue Tavel in time. The vehicle was submerged under about 15-20 feet of water, officials detail.

Investigators are trying to determine why or what caused the driver to leave the road.

The Medical Examiner tells FOX 5's Chris Shaw the cause of death is drowning.

Tavel was a River Trail Middle School teacher since 2001. She taught seventh grade Social Studies.
