The many cameos of 'Sharknado 2' made it (almost) watchable

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM - When Jared from subway agrees to join Andy Dick, Billy Ray Cyrus and seemingly every other B-, C-, and D-list celebrity on the planet in one made-for-TV movie that all parties involved concede as terrible, evidently people tune in. Syfy reaps profits, and the second movie in the last year about a tornado of sharks makes film history.

"This is one of the most cameo-rich films ever," said Young Hollywood Network host Baruch Shemtov, who did not try to defend "Sharknado" as a particularly bold or intelligent movie. But -- like so many of us -- he did admit to enjoying it.

"'Sharknado 2' is like candy corn," he said. "It's so bad that it's good. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not."

Perez Hilton utters one line before a shark snarfs him off a subway platform.

But just as soon as one celebrity vanishes another appears.

"Sharknado 2" never allows its audience to tune out. Instead it keeps them on the line waiting for the next surprise appearance.

"I mean, who wasn't in 'Sharknado 2'?" Shemtov said.

According to Nielsen, 3.9 million people watched the second "Sharknado," generating 580,000 tweets and an estimated 1 billion impressions.

While Robert Hays from "Airplane" flies an airplane, Judd Hirsch of "Taxi" drives a taxi.

And while Al Roker and Matt Lauer of "Today" may not win any awards for their performances, quite accidentally Syfy has reeled in a massive catch with its "Sharknado" model, one it seems unlikely to release any time soon.

"I am sure there will be a 'Sharknado 3," Shemtov said. "This is something that's so hard to replicate."
