Transgendered inmate demands to be released following rape claim

Posted: Updated:
ELOY, Ariz. - A transgendered inmate at the ICE detention center in Eloy is demanding she be released after she claims she was harassed and raped.

Eloy Police have confirmed they are investigating her claims.

The 23-year-old woman is officially listed as a male but identifies as a woman. Because of that she has been placed with male inmates.

Immigration activists are also demanding her release because they say the center cannot guarantee her safety and are not properly handling her allegations.

"Being in detention she is automatically subject to discrimination based on her gender identity, and being transgendered she is subject to mistreatment, a lack of mental health services, and subjected to potential rape and sexual assault," said Raul Alcaraz Ochoa.

The private company that operates the detention center has responded saying they have a zero tolerance policy on rape and sexual assault, all allegations are investigated.
