PHOENIX (KSAZ) - An overnight robbery, a family of four was held at gun point, according to Phoenix Police.

53-year-old Augustine Valenzuela is dead as a result.

It happened on Citrus Way near 43rd Avenue & Bethany Home. Investigators are still working to determine if this was random or targeted.

A single family home on Citrus Way in Phoenix was surrounded by crime scene tape early Friday morning. Detectives walked door to door looking for clues that will help them understand why a family of four was held at gunpoint, and Valenzuela was killed.

"I've never seen the mom, but I've always seen the dad, he drives a big truck; he always passes by here and says hi," said Ernestina Zuniga.

Residents describe the family as quiet, with frequent visits from teenage kids. Police were called out around 11 p.m. Thursday for a report of three armed men wearing masks breaking in and demanding valuables.

"About 10:30 or so, something like that, I heard a lot of voices next door, heard a car squealing away," said a neighbor.  That next door neighbor didn't want to be identified, but he may be one of a handful of witnesses.

At this point, Phoenix Police believe the suspects entered the home through a back door that led directly into a den or office area where Valenzuela works.

"Hearing a commotion going on in that room, the wife started going to that room, and she was placed on the ground at gunpoint. The two younger men came, and they were placed on the ground at gunpoint," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Sgt. Thompson said the 44-year-old woman, 20-year-old man, and 14-year-old boy are okay. Police believe the suspects ran out the front door after they severely injured the 53-year-old.

"It's like scary," said Ernestina, a neighbor.

Not knowing why is unnerving for those who watched police at work, hopeful it won't happen again. Police have not released how the man was killed and will only say he was severely injured.

Police believe the vehicle pictured on the right could be involved in the crime.
